Our Genius Hour Expo and projects (Term 4, 2015)

genius hour

This semester, students in Years 3 and 4 have once again been working on their Genius Hour Projects. Genius Hour is part of our Inquiry Based Learning, where students develop a complex “Non-Googleable” question on a topic of their choice, then research and present their findings. The students have been allocated one hour a week to work on these projects.

Today was our Genius Hour Expo! All of the St. Mark’s community was invited to see what students have been investigating for Genius Hour this term. The students shared their learning and carried out their actions of their intended impact.

We thought about who we teach for, make for or do for during Genius Hour.

It seems that all of our visitors have been very impressed at the wide variety of projects this term and the creativity that students have shown through their projects.

Below are some example projects….

Google Expeditions visits St. Mark’s Primary School

Today, students in Years 3 – 6 were fortunate enough to experience the Google Expeditions program. Google Expeditions uses a kit of simple Google Cardboards to create a virtual reality experience for teachers and students to explore many places around the world. Google Expeditions is currently being trialed in schools across 5 countries, and today St. Mark’s were among some of the first to go to places around the world ‘where school buses can not go’. Students had the opportunity to explore the surfaces of the Moon and Mars, scale up Mount Fuji, and explore the underwater environments of the Galapagos Islands; all of which are related to their units of inquiry. The expeditions created much wonder and excitement today, and naturally sparked many curiosities.

Did you know?: That Google Cardboard was developed by a french Google engineer as a personal Genius Hour project?

The next generation of computer coders.

Later this term St. Mark’s will be participating in the Hour Of Code, the largest global learning event in the world. In the Hour Of Code, students are encouraged to investigate and learn about the ways in which computer science is applied to a variety of applications.

Coding, which is a form of “Computational Thinking”, is marked as an essential fluency for students of today who will work in the jobs of tomorrow. These jobs are likely to be heavily influenced by technology and the ability to use it to solve problems.

Earlier in the Year our students competed in the BEBRAS Computational Thinking Challenge and performed exceptionally well.

Today students in Year 4 are learning to program or code their own version of the game Flappy Bird by using a tutorial.

Students, what sort of thinking skills did you need to use to work through the tutorials?

Students, post your own version of your Flappy Bird game. How is yours different?
